Loctite® Extend Rust Neutralizer Spray
Aerosol Rust Converter
Well-ventilated area, rubber or plastic gloves, safety glasses.
May stain skin. Wear gloves. Protect finished surfaces. Remove loose rust, dirt & oil. Sand with coarse sandpaper (50 grit) or wire brush. Some rust must remain to be converted. Caution: The product may cause rust if applied to a non-rusted surface. Surface Preparation: Old Steel: All loose or flaky rust, dirt, oil, paint and all other contaminants must be removed. Only conversion of firmly bonded rust will result in durable protection. Loose rust, mill scale & oil paint should be removed preferably by power wire brushing, followed by rinsing with water to remove powder & solubles. Manual wire brushing, chipping & scraping can also be used. Rust Conversion Time & Appearance: Two coats of Loctite® Extend Rust Neutralizer rust converter are recommended. On lightly rusted steel (that has been wire brushed), the first coat will start to develop a violet color within 60 seconds. This will become satin to flat black in appearance. The second coat should dry to a satin black appearance. On heavily rusted steel (that has been wire brushed), the first coat should develop a purple-black color within seconds. The second coat should dry to a black color with gloss varying from flat to satin. The second coat should be applied within 15 to 30 minutes of the first coat.
Ensure material is mixed thoroughly before using. Shake can before use. Remove oil, dirt and grease from surface. Wire brush to remove flaky rust and loose scale. Some surface rust must be present to convert. Brush or sponge on affected area liberally & evenly. A black coating will appear within 5 minutes. Uneven color indicates need for additional coats for maximum protection. Recoat time 15 to 30 minutes. Allow 24 hours minimum to dry before finish paint. Most finish paints will not require any additional primer. However, light color latex and metal filled paints require a solvent based primer on top of Loctite® Extend Rust Neutralizer before finish application. Brushes, rollers & other tools should be cleaned immediately with soap & water. Loctite® Extend Rust Neutralizer rust converter is extremely difficult to remove once dry. Shake spray can well before using. Avoid dripping by spraying a thin coat onto rusted surface 8 to 10 inches (20 25 cm) away until surface is lightly & evenly coated. Apply 2 to 3 coats allowing no more than 20 minutes drying time between coats. Final application should dry to a black finish. Wait for 24 hours before applying paint top coat. If not painting, protect from moisture & humidity & use third coat of rust neutralizer 24 hours after applying the second coat. For a smooth finish, sand with 320 grit sandpaper before top coating. Do not sand after top coating. This will break the barrier & will cause future rust. Resistance to Moisture, Solvents & Chemicals: Loctite® Extend Rust Neutralizer rust converter should be top coated for many applications. Continuous exposure of Loctite® Extend Rust Neutralizer to water, solvents or chemicals can cause whitening, blistering or flaking of the latex film. Loctite® Extend Rust Neutralizer should not be used in applications involving continuous immersion in water or fluids. It should be top coated with products known to be resistant to the environment expected. Latex top coats are not recommended without a suitable barrier coat.
Uncured rust neutralizer can be removed with rubbing alcohol or mineral spirits. Cured rust neutralizer can be removed with paint stripper or by sanding.
