Installing a squeak-free sub-floor
A popular application in developing a more solid, uniform floor system is the use of both nails and an elastomeric construction adhesive. The use of Loctite® PL® 400 SubFloor and Deck Adhesive provides a permanent bond within 48 hours and results in a solid, squeak-free floor.
Step-by-Step Directions
|
Lay the first row of plywood by positioning the "tongues" flush to the outside edge of the floor. |
|
Set the tongues of the second row into the grooves of the first row by using a sledgehammer and a 2x4 wood block. Begin every second row with a half sheet, so that the joints in adjacent rows will be staggered. |
|
When laying out the subfloor, tack the plywood panels in place as you go with 2 1/2" nails, so that you can make adjustments if necessary. Apply Loctite PL 400 SubFloor and Deck Adhesive in a continuous 3/8" bead to the floor joists by using a standard caulking gun. Use a zigzag pattern to ensure that all outer edges and centers are adequately covered. Apply the adhesive to one section at a time and nail completely, both at the perimeter and at the intermediate joints. |
Tips
Loctite PL 400 cures to a super strength bond, yet remains slightly elastic to automatically shim and compensate for wood shrinkage, absorbing noise and vibration, and reducing squeaky floors.
