Create a Personalized Flower Box for Someone Special

Finding that perfect gift for someone special in your life can be a challenge. You want something both thoughtful and functional with a dash of personalization to remind the recipient how much you care about them.

As a father of five, Dave (@dave.marrs) wanted to help his kids create something extra special for their grandfathers that was both useful and decorative. After finding some scrap wood in the garage, the team grabbed their Loctite® Power Grab® Ultimate Crystal Clear and got to work!

Loctite® Power Grab® Ultimate Crystal Clear adhesive is perfect for planters (or any wood-based project) because the zero second instant grab formula stays strong on all materials and in all weather conditions.

To create your own medicine cabinet and mirror refresh, follow the directions below.

What You’ll Need:

  • 2”x6” boards (enough to go around your insert)
  • Measuring tape
  • Plastic planter box insert
  • Power saw (or other tool to cut boards)
  • Sandpaper
  • Paint (non-toxic)
  • Clamps
  • Plants of your choice

Directions

1. Measure the planter box and cut the boards

You will be measuring your boards so that the plastic planter insert will sit inside the box with the insert’s lip resting on the top of the wood. To do this, measure the length and width of the bottom of the plastic insert. Then add 1/8” to both measurements for some wiggle room and an additional 3” to the width to account for the area where the boards will connect. Once done cutting, you should have four total boards: two for the length and two for the width.

2. Sand boards smooth

Now that you have all your pieces cut to the right length, check for any splintering and sand down to make the boards will be nice and smooth. This will help ensure your paint goes on perfectly.

3. Assemble and clamp

Arrange your four boards in the shape of the box and double check that the planter insert will fit in nicely. The shorter pieces (the width) should be on the ends of the longer boards. If necessary, adjust your board lengths and sand again.

Once your shape is perfect, use Loctite® Power Grab® Ultimate to adhere all of the pieces. To make sure that you have a tight hold while the adhesive cures add a few clamps and let dry for 24 hours.

4. Paint your hands

Grab the kids – it's time to paint! What makes this project extra special is that you will be decorating the planter with everyone’s hand prints. Use enough paint to cover the entire hand, but not too much that will cause dripping. Then, firmly press your kid’s hand against the wood for a permanent imprint from your little helper!
All five Marrs kids left their mark on this project, regardless of age. Everyone wanted to be a part of such a special gift for grandpa.

5. Plant your flowers and herbs

With the planter built nice and sturdy, it is time to transfer the plants of your choice into the plastic planter box insert.

Dave and family went with a combo of beautiful flowers to brighten the day and herbs for cooking delicious meals.

6. Deliver the present!

You did it! And now is the best part – delivering this special gift to someone important in your life. They will absolutely love how unique this gift is and appreciate the hard work that you put into it.
