Porcelain sink repair:
Don’t throw money down the drain! 

Damaged your bathroom sink? We’re here to explain everything you need to know about porcelain sink repair. Our guide explains two methods of ceramic sink repair, for both big and small fixes. Don’t rush to replace your chipped sink, just reach for the right epoxy!

Cracks in ceramic sink: Assess the situation and the sink

Porcelain sinks are both beautiful and easy to clean. On the down side, it’s a brittle material and easily cracked. One drop of a heavy object can leave you staring at a major chip in your porcelain. 

If you have a cast iron porcelain overlay sink, you will probably see a black mark under the chip. Letting cast iron come into contact with water will cause it to rust, so don’t delay on this repair job! 

If, on the other hand, you’ve chipped a piece off of a solid porcelain sink, and you still have the piece, a quick repair is possible with a clear epoxy glue. Here’s how to fix both types of chipped porcelain sinks. 

Porcelain sink repair with epoxy putty 

Epoxy putty is the perfect solution for porcelain sink chip repair because of its gap filling properties, durable seal, and ability to sand and paint. Using Loctite Repair Putty All Purpose will leave you with a seamless repair job that will stand the test of time. Here’s how to go about it.

  1. Clean and dry the area you’re repairing.
  2. Cut the desired amount of putty epoxy with a spackling knife.
  3. Knead the putty by hand wearing gloves for approximately 1 minute, or until a uniform color is achieved.
  4. Apply the putty within three minutes of mixing. Work it into the cavity with the putty knife. Make sure it’s smooth and evenly distributed.
  5. Rub the area with a finger dipped in warm soapy water, until the patch is smooth and molded perfectly.
  6. Allow cure time of 15-60 minutes before sanding.
  7. Sand the area lightly with emery paper until smooth.
  8. Apply porcelain touch up paint to the area and allow paint to dry.

There are several brands of porcelain sink repair kits on the market, but buyer beware! Matching the right color can be an issue, and these kits are not always designed to fill the gaps. This leaves noticeable indentations in your sink, causing more trouble in the long run.

Porcelain sink repair with epoxy glue

If you’re repairing a solid porcelain sink and still have possession of the broken piece, Loctite Epoxy Clear Multipurpose will help you with a fast and easy repair. This is what you do: 

  1. Lightly sand the surfaces you’re gluing.
  2. Clean and dry the surfaces.
  3. Depress the double pistons applying the appropriate amount of glue to a disposable surface. Always wear gloves to protect your skin.
  4. Mix resin and hardener for at least 1 minute.
  5. Apply glue to both surfaces and press together firmly.
  6. Quickly wipe away excess glue, and support the piece in place for roughly 10 minutes.
