How to glue PLA the easy way

Artificial Content Title -- to be hidden

If you’re interested in 3D printing, you’ll want to know how to glue PLA. For the best results, you need a suitable glue, and the right technique. In this guide we’ll show you what to do, step by step.

The best way to glue PLA: Choosing the right adhesive

PLA is cheap and versatile, so it’s no wonder this biodegradable plastic has become one of the most popular materials for 3D printing.

If you’re planning a 3D printing project, you may be wondering how to glue PLA. It’s the right question to ask. Even if you have a clear vision of what you want to achieve, you won’t get far without the right adhesive. So which one is right for gluing PLA together?

Super glue and epoxy resin are some of the most commonly used glues for PLA projects. Remember to always check the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure your selection is compatible with PLA.

Epoxy resin is a strong, durable adhesive that can produce great results. However, epoxy also requires a little more effort, as you have to mix the components before use. Some kinds of epoxy heat up when setting and curing, so there’s also a risk of damaging the PLA parts.

Overall, the best way to glue PLA together is with a high-quality super glue. Compared to other adhesives, super glue has numerous advantages:

  • Strong and durable
  • Easy to use
  • Fast application and dry time
  • Dries transparent
  • Good value

Loctite offers an extensive range of super glues, most of which are suitable for use on plastics such as PLA. For a 3D printing project, using a dab of Loctite Super Glue Gel Control is one of the best ways to glue PLA.

This strong adhesive comes in an easy-to-use squeeze bottle, with a specially designed applicator. As the name suggests, Loctite Super Glue Gel Control gives you total control so you can apply the adhesive with maximum accuracy and precision.

The gel consistency makes it neater than other super glues, and the product dries transparent in just 30-45 seconds, making it ideal for gluing PLA 3D prints into place.

How to glue PLA: Step by step application

Once you’ve chosen a premium super glue, you’re ready to learn how to glue PLA together for neat, long-lasting results!

Here’s how to glue PLA 3D prints in just a few simple steps.

  1. Gather your materials. In addition to your adhesive, you need sandpaper and any protective equipment recommended in the product instructions. For clean-up, keep a cloth and warm, soapy water and some acetone on hand.
  2. Prepare the PLA. The surfaces should be close-fitting, completely clean and dry, and ideally slightly rough. For the best results, use fine sandpaper to sand the surface you want to bond.
  3. Apply the glue. Squeeze out a small drop onto one of the PLA surfaces.
  4. Immediately press the PLA surfaces together. Hold them in place for about 15-30 seconds. The glue will set quickly, so make sure to reposition the parts promptly if necessary.
  5. Leave to dry. It can take up to 24 hours for the glue to cure fully. We recommend leaving the glue to dry overnight before handling the object. Check the product instructions for accurate information about your glue’s drying time.
  6. Clean-up. If you end up with an accidental glue stain on your PLA, there are ways to remove it. If the glue is still wet, use a soft sponge or cloth soaked in warm, soapy water to gently remove the stain. If the glue has already dried, you can try using acetone instead. However, keep in mind that while acetone is an effective glue remover, it may cause discoloration.
