From cushions to construction: How to glue foam together

Artificial Content Title -- to be hidden

Want to know how to glue foam together? We’ve got the right glues for different foam applications. We’ll also explain how to use glue on foam board and how to transform foam into furniture.

Construction or crafts: The right glue to use on foam projects

Foam is a common material that has a variety of uses. From construction sites to model making, its unique physical properties offer lots of different applications. Here are some common uses for foam…

  • construction insulation
  • furniture padding
  • sound proofing
  • school or work presentations
  • displays
  • signage for businesses
  • small scale models
  • backing for framed art
  • picture boards
  • sculpting

Compatible foam adhesives

While the uses of foam are extensive, the list of compatible glues is not. Super glues aren’t formulated to grip foam, and epoxies are too rigid. Here’s a breakdown of the best glues to use on foam.

Construction adhesive: Loctite PL 300 VOC Foamboard Adhesive

For remodeling or construction projects like foam board panels.

Contact adhesive: Loctite Stik’N Seal Indoor

For indoor crafting projects like modeling. Ideal for use in poorly ventilated spaces.

Spray adhesive: Loctite High Performance 200 Spray Adhesive Glue

For open and closed cell foam projects like seat cushions, signage, picture boards, etc. Note that all Loctite spray adhesives are compatible with foam projects. Combinations of high temperatures and high humidity can promote bond failure in some applications.

General purpose: Loctite Extreme Glue

For small, detailed projects like crafts or modeling.

How to glue foam board on construction sites

For bonding foam insulation panels and other material pick up Loctite PL 300 VOC Foamboard Adhesive. This latex water-based adhesive is compatible with all “unfaced” foamboard insulation products.

Here’s how to glue foam board together with this specialized construction adhesive.

  1. Cut and pre-fit all foam before applying the adhesive.
  2. Cut the tip of the cartridge at a 45-degree angle, to the desired bead size.
  3. Load the caulking gun and puncture the cartridge seal.
  4. Starting approximately 1 inch from the panel edge, apply vertical beads 10 inches apart. Do not glue the perimeter.
  5. Place the foam against the substrate immediately after applying the adhesive and press firmly. Do not over press.
  6. Use mechanical fasteners to clamp and secure the foam in place until the adhesive is fully cured. Temperature and humidity affects the cure time, see label for details.

How to glue foam sheets together: Making a window seat cushion

Creating a window seat cushion is the perfect way to add warmth to your built-in window seating area. Here’s what you need and how to glue foam into furniture.

How to glue foam sheets together:

  1. Measure the dimensions of the window seat.
  2. Mark and cut the foam to the dimensions.
  3. For connecting foam sections (like in corners): spray the ends of the foam, wait until adhesive is tacky, and fix the pieces together. Leave to dry.
  4. To create the cushion cover: measure and cut the fabric. Leave extra fabric to wrap around the bottom and cover the entire foam cushion.
  5. Place the foam piece on top of the fabric and wrap the foam like a present.
  6. After pre-fitting the fabric, unfold the fabric and apply Loctite High Performance 200 Spray Adhesive Glue to the underside of the fabric and foam. See manufacturer’s instructions for details.
  7. After glue is tacky, wrap the fabric into place and smooth onto the foam. Leave to dry.

Once your cushion has dried, it’s ready to use! Place it on your window seating area and add throw pillows for extra warmth.
