Hang Christmas decorations without damaging your home

Ready to transform your home with incredible Christmas decorations? Here’s how to hang Christmas decorations damage-free.

If you have just finished remodeling your home or want to avoid damage and costly repairs afterward, you may be hesitant to hang decorations on your walls and ceilings.

Peeling off tape and using tacks and nails can leave visible, unsightly marks on pristine ceilings and walls. Unless you want to do some touch-ups after the festive season, it is best to avoid these options. To help you overcome these problems, the Loctite team has compiled a list of suggestions for how to hang Christmas decorations without damaging your walls.

Use the following methods to hang Christmas decor without damaging your walls.

Loctite Funtak Mounting Putty

This specially designed putty can be a great option for hanging lightweight decorations such as garlands, holiday cards, and paper ornaments. This long-lasting, removable putty easily peels off without damaging paint.

Here’s how to hang decor using Loctite Funtak Mounting Putty.

1. Gather supplies: For this project, you will need:

2. Prepare the surface: Clean and dry the surface you want to apply the putty.

3. Attach the putty to your decorations: Take a small amount of Loctite Funtak Mounting Putty, roll and knead it between your fingers until it is warm and soft, and attach it to the back of the decoration you want to hang.

4. Hang the decorations: Position the object and press it firmly against the wall.

Tip: For the strongest bond, use four tabs of putty per pound of weight.

Suction hooks

Hanging substantial decorations or Christmas lights on metal, tile, glass, or other smooth surfaces? Suction cups are a great solution that can handle a little extra weight — up to 3kgs. They are easy to install and remove once the festive season is over.

Follow these steps when hanging Christmas decorations using suction cups.

1. Get the necessary supplies: You will need:

  • Suction hooks
  • Water
  • Cleaning supplies

2. Prepare the work area: Clean and dry the work area because excess moisture and dust can weaken suction.

3. Attach the hooks: Wet the cups slightly and create a strong seal by pressing them firmly against the surface. Remember to space out the hooks for the best support.

4. Display your decorations: Hang the decorations along the hooks.

Tip: Suction hooks don’t work well on porous surfaces like drywall. In such cases, you might need to find alternatives like adhesive hooks.

How to hang Christmas decor from the ceiling using removable adhesive strips

Give your ornaments a magical suspended mid-air look by hanging them off the ceiling with these steps.

1. Gather materials: You will need the following supplies:

  • Fishing line
  • Christmas ornaments
  • Removable adhesive strips
  • Scissors
  • Step ladder

2. Trim the adhesive strips: Cut the strips in half to create smaller pieces. This reduces their surface area and makes them easier to conceal.

3. Tie the ornaments to your fishing line: Cut the fishing line to the desired length and attach one end to an ornament.

4. Hang the ornaments on the ceiling: Peel both sides of the adhesive strip and stick the other end of the fishing line to the side that glues to the wall. You can leave a bit of extra line to ensure it has a little give in case it loosens. Press the adhesive strip firmly on the ceiling, and you are done. Repeat this process for all your ornaments.

If you are looking for a permanent solution for hanging Christmas decorations, construction adhesive is an excellent option for both indoor and outdoor use. You can install permanent hooks around your home without damaging interior or exterior walls. More importantly, the strong and durable nature of this adhesive means you can reliably hang light or heavy decorations without the use of nails and screws.

Follow these steps when installing permanent hooks for festive decor.

1. Get the necessary materials and supplies: You will need:

2. Prepare the work area: Clean the work area to remove any dirt, dust, and debris. Remember to dry off any excess moisture as well.

3. Apply construction adhesive: Apply a bead of Loctite Power Grab Ultimate on the back of the item/hook you want to stick in place and firmly press it against the wall. This product has a 0-second instant grab with 10 minutes of repositionable time to make it perfect. Leave the adhesive to cure completely over a period of 24 hours.

4. Enjoy extended use: Once the glue is completely dry, you can enjoy the use of the hook(s) for many seasons to come.

Brick clips

You can use brick clips to hang holiday decor items on brick walls with zero damage by following these steps.

1. Gather materials: You will need:

  • Brick clips
  • Measuring tape
  • Your preferred decor items

2. Identify your spot: Using a measuring tape, find the perfect spot to place the clips.

3. Install the clip: Secure the clip over the top of the brick. Choose clips with springs and adjustable teeth for a tighter fit. Remember to space out the clips to balance the load evenly.

4. Hang the décor: Once the clips are in place, hang your wreaths, lights, and other decorations. Make any adjustments to ensure perfect placement.

Pro Tip: Avoid using brick clips on sealed, crumbling, or chipped bricks.
