Learning how to mend a hole in fabric using glue can save you time and money. Our guide will help you mend ripped garments like a pro, extending the life of your favorite soccer uniform.

Benefits of using Loctite adhesive to mend fabric holes

Have you discovered a hole in your soccer uniform? Are you looking for a quick, lasting fix to get you back on the field as soon as possible? As the Official Partner of the U.S. Soccer Federation, Loctite brings trusted strength and reliability to your soccer uniform repairs. Loctite’s fabric adhesive is an effective and convenient solution that does the job without a needle and thread.

Here are the main reasons glue is the best way to mend a hole in fabric.

  1. Quick fix: When every second counts, fabric glue is a practical alternative to sewing. Applying glue is faster than sewing when making quick fixes like mending a small tear or securing a loose hem. If your soccer uniform is torn, use fabric glue to get back in the game quickly, with minimal time on the sidelines.
  2. Simple: You don’t need special skills to repair torn garments using fabric glue. Unlike sewing, you don’t need machines, thread, or needles. With just a few basic supplies, anyone can quickly mend their torn soccer uniform using this no-sew solution.
  3. Flexible: Fabric adhesive allows for flexible patch positioning, ensuring seamless and attractive garment repairs. You can reposition the patch for perfect placement before the adhesive sets, making it easier to achieve the desired results with minimal effort.
  4. Lasting results: Top-quality fabric glues are designed to provide durable results. You can rest assured that the repairs will hold for a long time, regardless of how often you wash and wear your repaired soccer uniform.
  5. No visible signs: Sewing and embroidery can affect the appearance of repaired garments, but with fabric glue, there is no need for visible stitches. Your repaired uniform will have a cleaner and seamless appearance.

How to mend a hole in fabric using Loctite glue

The process of mending holes in fabric using glue is straightforward. Here are the steps to follow.

1. Gather supplies: Before you start mending holes in your soccer uniform using fabric adhesive, get the following supplies:

  • Fabric adhesive/glue — Loctite Vinyl, Fabric & Plastic Repair
  • Patch (preferably in the same color as the torn soccer uniform)
  • A spreader (a piece of cardboard or a small brush)
  • Parchment paper
  • Scissors
  • Fabric marker
Ripped or torn fabric placed over a flat surface.

2. Prepare the garment/surfaces: Ensure the garment and patch are clean. Moisture, dirt, and oil can hinder the formation of a strong bond between the adhesive and fabric. Turn the garment inside out and place it on a clean, flat surface.

Identify the position where you want to stick the patch and mark it with your fabric marker. This can save you from repositioning the patch repeatedly after applying glue. If necessary, cut the patch down to size using a pair of scissors.

3. Apply glue to the patch: Apply a thin layer of adhesive to the patch or along one side of the tear if you are repairing torn seams.

For smaller patches, start by applying glue on the edges and the center. You can cover more surface area for bigger patches by applying the glue in a zigzag pattern. Afterward, use an applicator tool, a piece of cardboard, or a brush to spread the glue evenly and precisely.

Remember not to apply too much adhesive as it can bleed through the polyester fabric, create stiff spots, or squeeze out.

4. Mend the garment: Carefully position the patch over the hole, using the markings for precise placement. Put parchment paper underneath before pressing the glued surfaces together firmly. This keeps the glue from sticking to unintended surfaces. You can use another object with a flat surface (say, a heavy book) to apply pressure evenly.

If you need to reposition the patch, do so quickly, as fabric adhesive normally sets in minutes. If the adhesive has started to dry, gently peel away the patch. Alternatively, you can use a fabric-safe adhesive remover, acetone, or a small amount of warm water to soften the glue before carefully peeling away the patch or separating a sealed seam.

You must remove residual adhesive on the surfaces using adhesive remover or a damp cloth before reapplying glue.

5. Allow to dry: Let the glue dry completely for a long-lasting bond. Be sure to follow the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions regarding drying and curing. Most glues take between 24 and 72 hours to cure completely.

6. Inspect and enjoy: After the glue has cured completely, inspect the bond to see whether it is strong enough.
