Create a Beautiful, DIY Fluted Pattern on Any Woodworking Project

Sometimes your DIY project needs a little something extra to give it that special touch. Our friend Molly (@thehonesthome_), who went from a total DIY beginner to experienced professional over the course of only a year, was kind enough to share her favorite tip for her decorative DIYs: trim!

Molly used trim and Loctite® Super Glue ULTRA Gel Control to create a beautiful, fluted look on a keepsake box she built for her coffee table in her newly remodeled living room. In just a few minutes, she took a plain old box to a lovely centerpiece.

Watch Molly explain her idea and her process in the video below.

To learn how Molly added a beautiful exterior to her keepsake box, follow the steps below!

What You’ll Need:

  • Lumber, enough to create your finished project
  • Trim, 1” wide or less
  • Sandpaper and paint (optional)

Directions

1. APPLY TRIM TO YOUR LUMBER WITH ADHESIVE

Prior to cutting or assembling any wood, gather your trim and the lumber you will be using to create your DIY. Make sure you have enough trim to cover your lumber. Using Loctite® Super Glue ULTRA Gel Control, apply a bead of glue to the back of the trim and place firmly on the lumber in rows.

Loctite® Super Glue ULTRA Gel Control doesn’t run like other adhesives, meaning no mess to clean up. It’s also impact resistant, water resistant and so strong you don’t even need clamps to secure your project! Molly keeps a bottle or two in her toolbox at all times.

Continue to attach remaining pieces of trim until lumber is covered to your liking. Let dry.

2. Cut your lumber

Once cured, cut your fluted lumber just like you would for a plain board to get the pieces required to create whichever DIY you are tackling today. This is also the time to collect any other materials specific to your project. Molly is making a keepsake box so the lumber and her handy-dandy Loctite® Super Glue is all she needs!

3. Assemble your DIY

From here, continue creating your DIY project using your wood pieces. Now your finished product will have an eye-catching fluted design.

Molly applied trim to her lumber before mitering the edges and assembling her keepsake box. She also sanded down her project and painted it black to match her decor. Feel free to sand your piece down and do the same!

This handy little trim hack will put those final touches on your DIY, giving an elegant exterior to everything from keepsake boxes to doors and planters. Make sure your project lasts with the help of Loctite® Super Glue ULTRA Gel Control.
