Home Tune Up: Fix Those Loose Transition Strips

Have you ever walked between rooms in your home and noticed a loose transition strip between rooms? You may have even tripped over a particularly wobbly one! These small, wooden separators often come loose due to poor adhesion or regular wear and tear.   This is a common problem, but luckily, our friend Omar (@justaconstructionguy) has a quick fix using Loctite® PL PREMIUM MAX.

Fix Loose Transition Strips in Just Four Steps

Transition strips work best when they go unnoticed. A good transition strip, or T-strip, should remain solid and stationary.

But have you ever walked between rooms in your home and noticed a loose strip? You may even trip over a particularly wobbly one! These small, wooden separators can come loose due to poor adhesion or regular wear and tear.

This is a common problem, but luckily, our friend Omar (@justaconstructionguy) has a quick fix using Loctite® PL PREMIUM MAX. You can find Loctite construction adhesives at your local hardware store or homecenter.

Now, do it yourself!

What You’ll Need:

  • Transition strip (we suggest re-using the loose one)
  • Chisel

Directions

1. Remove old adhesive

First, remove old adhesive from both the transition strip and the floor. Use a chisel to scrape away the more stubborn gunk.

In Omar’s case, scraping away the old adhesive showed the reason why the strip came loose - the previous homeowners didn’t use enough strong adhesive to begin with!

2. Remove dust and small particles

Use a vacuum to remove dust and small particles from both the floor and the T-strip. This will ensure proper adhesion for the long term.

3. Apply adhesion to your T-strip

Apply one, long, steady bead of Loctite® PL PREMIUM MAX to both the T-strip and the floor.

Loctite® PL PREMIUM MAX works on wood, laminate, drywall, concrete, brick, masonry, stone, marble, metal, stainless steel, fiberglass and more. It’s Omar’s go-to adhesive for quick fixes he wants to last - like loose T-strips.

4. Replace T-strip

Press your T-strip into its proper place on the floor. If any adhesive oozes out, don’t worry. You can quickly wipe away the residue before it cures with some mineral spirits. Loctite® PL PREMIUM MAX dries within 24 hours. Avoid disturbing the T-strip until then and you’ll be good to go!

Loctite® PL PREMIUM MAX makes it simple to fix those pesky problems around your home. Use it to lay transition strips, construct eye-catching DIY projects, adhere tough materials like leather, brick, concrete and more. Your home is your oyster!
