These patches are one of the easiest and best ways to add personality to a soccer jersey. Three-dimensional patches offer realistic depth and clarity, creating a stunning and professional-looking final outcome.
Customize your soccer jersey with the following step-by-step instructions.
1. Gather supplies:
- Plain soccer jersey
- Iron-on patch
- Iron
- Ironing cloth
2. Ready the jersey: Ensure the garment is clean and wrinkle-free before applying the patch. Use a lint roller to remove lint. Place the shirt flat on a heat-resistant ironing surface.
3. Position the patch: Place it on the jersey with the adhesive side down. Cover the patch with an ironing cloth or an old t-shirt to protect both the patch and the jersey from direct heat. Be careful not to move the patch while covering it.
Tip: The best position for the patch should ensure it is clearly visible without causing discomfort to the wearer.
4. Iron the patch: Set your iron to medium-high heat, then press it over the patch. Hold it there for 10 to 30 seconds. Let the patch cool for a couple of minutes, then flip the shirt and press the iron over the back of the patch for about 30 seconds. You don’t need to place an ironing cloth or any other garment over the patch when ironing it from the back.
Tip: Keep the steam function on your iron off because dry heat is more effective at activating the adhesive on the patch.
5. Inspect the outcome: Allow the patch to cool, then check whether it is properly attached by gently tugging at the edges. If it is uneven or has curled, place an ironing cloth over it and iron it for a few more seconds until you achieve the desired outcome.
Use these steps to quickly and affordably make a custom DIY soccer jersey.
1. Gather supplies:
- Blank jersey
- Computer and printer
- Fabric paint
- Stencil brush or sponge
- Loctite Spray Adhesive Multi-Purpose
- Newspaper
- Craft knife
- Iron
- Freezer or craft paper
2. Prepare your design: Download and print your preferred design, or draw it on printer or freezer paper. Keep things simple, as you will be cutting the stencil by hand. However, if you have a lot of time on your hands, you are free to go for intricate designs.
Tip: Cutouts in drawings and letters can complicate your project, even if they can be stuck into place with a light blast of Loctite Spray Adhesive Multi-Purpose.
3. Prepare the stencil: If you decide to print your design, trim the freezer paper to A4 size and feed it to your printer. Print the design on the non-shiny side of the paper. Use a craft knife to carefully cut the design into the freezer paper.
4. Attach the stencil to your jersey: Position the jersey on an ironing board, then place the stencil on top with the shiny side facing down. Set the iron to medium-high and press it over the stencil.
Tip: Do not slide the iron over the stencil to avoid catching, creasing, or tearing it.
5. Paint over the stencil: After the stencil is perfectly attached to the jersey, place several sheets of newspaper between the fabric where the stencil is positioned. This will stop paint from bleeding through to the other side of the shirt.
With the shirt lying flat, use a stencil brush or sponge to apply paint over the design with a dabbing motion. Create a dense image by using a generous amount of paint. Do not leave any pooled paint, as it may bleed under the edges as you peel the stencil off.
6. Peel the stencil away: After you are happy with the paint application, carefully remove the stencil and dispose of it.
7. Allow the paint to dry: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding setting and drying the fabric paint.
Use Loctite Super Glue Ultra Gel Control to permanently attach patches to soccer jerseys. This adhesive works well with the polyester used to make the shirts.
Steps to create a personalized jersey with adhesive.
1. Gather supplies:
- Loctite Super Glue Ultra Gel Control
- Soccer jersey
- Patch (one or more)
- A clean, dry cloth
2. Prepare the jersey: Clean and dry the patch and jersey. The bond will not hold if adhesive is applied to a dirty surface.
3. Apply adhesive: Apply a thin line of Loctite Super Glue Ultra Gel Control along the perimeter of the patch, then press it firmly against the jersey. This adhesive cures clear and remains flexible.
4. Leave to dry: Allow the adhesive to bond. This specific adhesive sets in seconds and cures fully in 12 to 24 hours.
Pro tip: In addition to cloth patches, you can use Loctite Super Glue Ultra Gel Control to attach numbers and embellishments to your soccer jersey.
