Knowing how to install wall molding with the right adhesive will ensure a strong long-lasting bond when installing wall trim—it’ll look like a professional did it! Get the facts here.

How to install wall molding—planning out your job

Begin by measuring the room and figure out how much molding you will need. Always purchase a little extra in case of mistakes or miscalculation. You may want to prime the molding and perhaps put one coat of paint on to minimize the number of coats you have to do once it is in place.

How to install wall trim—step by step

Gather your tools: Along with the molding, you will need:

    • Caulking gun
    • Adhesive
    • Tape measure
    • Utility knife
    • Ruler
    • Miter saw
    • Pencil
    • Rags for cleanup

Have your molding and saw set up in a convenient place for cutting.

Safety: Gloves are always a good idea as well as a fan if you’re not working in a well-ventilated area.

Prepare the surfaces: You need to work on clean surfaces for the adhesive to work properly. Dust or wipe down the walls and/or ceiling if necessary.

    1. Measure carefully before cutting your trim. Test fit each piece before applying adhesive.
    2. Snip off the end of the caulk tube to get your desired size bead.
    3. Apply a continuous bead to one of the surfaces about 1/2 inch in from the edge
    4. Apply pressure as you put it into place.
    5. The glue is repositionable for about 15 minutes.

Putting molding on walls with glue means you won’t need any nails and the glue will help keep the molding from warping or pulling away from the wall.
