An overview of plumber’s glue

Plumber’s glue, often referred to as plumber’s cement, is a common waterproof adhesive that you can use on all your plumbing jobs around the house. It dries clear, doesn’t run when applying, and forms a watertight seal. This specialty glue is ideal for high-moisture plumbing-type applications indoors and out.

How to use plumber’s cement

Safety first: Gloves keep your hands safe. Also, it’s best to have some ventilation in the area in which you are working. Your typical bathroom exhaust fan works great for this.

  1.  The pieces that are going to be glued need to be clean and dry. If they are really slick, sanding with a high-grit paper may also be a good idea.
  2. Pre-fit all pieces together before applying glue.
  3. Read the product application instructions on the packaging.
  4. Open the plumber’s glue and apply it to both surfaces of the pieces to be glued and let sit for 5 minutes.
  5. Press surfaces together and clamp if necessary.
  6. Curing times may vary depending on temperature, humidity, and the amount of plumber’s cement you used. 24 hours may be required for full curing to take place.

Clean up: Clean any tools used immediately with soap and warm water. Wipe up any glue residue with a paper towel or disposable rags.

Removing excess adhesive. Sometimes glue ends up on an unwanted surface. It’s easy to remove if you follow this advice.
