How to fix a broken ceramic planter with adhesives

Artificial Content Title -- to be hidden

A broken ceramic planter does not always need to be replaced. If it is the right kind of break, LOCTITE® Ceramic Repair Adhesive may help you make a clean, water-resistant repair. Inside, you’ll learn how to judge the damage before you repair and give the adhesive the dry time it needs before you use the planter again.

Can you fix a broken ceramic planter?

A broken ceramic planter may still be repairable. The key is what the break is asking the adhesive to do.

Broken ceramic planter before adhesive repair.

A cracked rim or broken edge is different from a planter wall that has split apart.

If the wall still holds its shape and the damaged area is shallow, you may be able to repair it. But if the adhesive has to hold the planter wall together, the break may need a different repair approach.

Once you understand the break, you can look at what the adhesive is made to do.

How LOCTITE® Ceramic Repair Adhesive may help

LOCTITE® Ceramic Repair Adhesive is made for ceramic and porcelain repairs, such as cracks or chips.

That matters for your broken planter because you are using an adhesive made for ceramic, not guessing with some general-purpose glue.

On white ceramic, the glossy white finish can help the repaired area look like it belongs. The formula is easy to use, and its water resistance also matters for a planter you expect to water again.

Before you apply it, clean the break so the adhesive can contact the ceramic.

How to fix a ceramic planter with adhesive

Empty ceramic planter.

Start by emptying the planter and cleaning the ceramic’s break.

Remove the plant and soil first. Loose soil can sit between the adhesive and the ceramic, which is exactly where the adhesive needs direct contact.

Wipe away loose ceramic dust or soil from the broken area. If you use soap to clean the ceramic, rinse it well so that no residue is left behind.

Let the ceramic dry fully before you apply adhesive.

Water at the break can get between the adhesive and the ceramic.

Apply a thin layer of adhesive

Shake LOCTITE® Ceramic Repair Adhesive before opening it. Apply a thin layer to the shallow, damaged spot. Do not build the adhesive layer more than 1/8 inch deep.

If the adhesive sits higher than the surrounding ceramic or leaves a ridge, level it gently with a straight edge or brush. If the shallow damaged spot still needs more coverage, wait four hours before adding a second thin coat.

Wipe away stray wet adhesive with water or a damp cloth before it dries.

Once you finish applying the adhesive, leave it alone so it can dry.

Let the adhesive dry before putting soil back in

Give the adhesive 24 hours to dry before you put soil back in the ceramic planter.

During that time, leave the repaired area undisturbed and set the planter somewhere it will not be bumped.

Water can come later. During those 24 hours, leave the repaired area dry and do not water the planter.

After the adhesive has had time to dry, check the repaired area before you put the soil back in.

When a broken ceramic planter may need more than adhesive

Adhesive is not a substitute for missing ceramic.

If part of the planter is gone or the damaged spot would need a thick fill, adding more adhesive will not fix it. The job has moved beyond a thin adhesive layer.

A shallow crack or chip is one repair. But a wide gap or a ceramic planter wall that has come apart is another. That is when the planter needs a different repair approach.

FAQs about fixing a broken ceramic planter

Can I use LOCTITE® Ceramic Repair Adhesive on a colored ceramic planter?

You can consider it, but plan the appearance before you start. LOCTITE® Ceramic Repair Adhesive dries glossy white and is not paintable. If your planter is colored, decide whether a visible white repair is acceptable.

How long should I wait before putting soil back in?

Give the adhesive 24 hours to dry before you put soil back in. While it dries, set the planter where it will not be bumped and leave the repaired area undisturbed.

Can I fix a broken ceramic planter if a piece is missing?

Adhesive is not a substitute for missing ceramic. LOCTITE® Ceramic Repair Adhesive is made for shallow ceramic repairs, including chips and cracks, not for replacing a lost piece or filling a wide gap.

How does water resistance help on a repaired ceramic planter?

Water resistance matters because a ceramic planter may be exposed to moisture after the adhesive has dried. LOCTITE® Ceramic Repair Adhesive is water-resistant, but that does not replace dry time. Give the adhesive 24 hours before you put soil back in or water the planter.
